In between visiting favorite websites and checking out email and other information, people network with their friends on facebook. Social media is loved because people can share their true feelings.   



Until recently, description of feeling was restricted to the use of words. It is now possible to share feelings through use of emoticons. Facebook has native emoticons that are extensive and satisfactory for most users. For those who want more, they can get new funny emoticons through downloading third party applications from dozens of sites on the internet.

Facebook initially allowed users to send smileys and other emoticons in their facebook messages. That however changed after the social networking giant allowed their use in comments and status updates.
There are 26 different smileys and other icons available for use on facebook. To view then, open chat window and click emoticons menu. The built in emoticons are easiest to use for ordinary facebook users.  
To insert an emoticon to facebook status update, you first need to click the white text box to update status. Then, below the box, locate emoticon icons from the list of icons there. Click the icon and select the icon you want. 
As you can see, facebook emoticons are ordered in categories. The categories are emotions, entertainment, food, and drink. Under feeling category, there many smiley expressions, which can be inserted directly into the status update by typing their shortcut code. 
In summary, facebook emoticons allow users to match their status updates with their feelings, their present entertainment, what they are watching, and what their eating or drinking. 
Other than native emoticons, users can add new funny emoticons from through downloading from third parties. Such emoticons are added to facebook through downloading applications such as chat applications.
